process

Images are captured on film using a 4x5 Ebony SV45Te wooden folding field camera, modified with a Shen Hao 6 x17 adapter back to create panoramic images. Its relatively lightweight and compact properties allow me to carry it with relative ease. My film of choice is either Fuji Velvia 100 or Kodak Ektachrome 100 VS, depending on the situation. My favorite lens is a Schneider 110mm Super Symmar XL; this is an extremely sharp lens that utilizes a unique arrangement of elements, allowing for a more compact, lightweight design while working perfectly with both 4 x 5 and panoramic formats. In addition, I frequently carry a 75mm, 150mm, 210mm, and 300mm depending on the subject and how much additional weight I choose to pack.

I do not use color filters of any kind, choosing to work only with the natural light. While I respect and appreciate the art of digital photography, I have chosen a more traditional route in keeping with my philosophy of producing images that most accurately and truthfully reflect the landscape at the moment of capture. During the process of photographing, I use positive transparency film that allows me the greatest combination of color saturation, sharpness, flexibility, and contrast for the images I make in the field. My filters of choice are 1, 2, or 3-stop gradual neutral density Lee filters, in order to control the balance of light from sky or horizon to foreground. I also occasionally use a polarizing filter to reduce glare or eliminate reflection.

Prints are now only available as digital output images (lightjet). All of the prints are created by John Weldon in his lab in Los Angeles. Weldon labs are masters of digital imaging and work with me very specifically to translate the natural light captured on film into the highest quality and most accurate prints available: the large format slides allow print sizes up to 30 " x 40" with outstanding clarity, depth and color saturation. Images are controlled for contrast and shading only: all images are color-matched to their film transparency counterpart. Each print is mounted to an archival, acid-free mat, which is then personally hand-signed by me. Because the prints are crafted individually, please allow up to four weeks for delivery.
